I t witnessed the virtual collapse of the Imperial authority at Delhi, and the resultant tendency on the part of Indian and non-Indian adventurers to try their luck in its outlying provinces. Thus Alivardi, an enterprising adventurer, seized the Government of Bengal . in April, 1740 A.D., and ruled it as a practically independent state till his death in the month, of April, 175G A.Den_US
