L pen-portraits and character-sketches culled from English literature. It aims at introducing you to a wider circle of acquaintances than you have met, or ever could meet, in real life. Some of the people described will be old friends you have already come across in your own reading ; for they were suggested to me as favourites by school pupils of about your own age. There are many, however, that may be quite new to you, occurring as they do in all kinds of stories, not to mention other branches of literature. They are here for your enjoyment, and a very mixed company they are too— heroes and heroines of history as well as of fiction— people ordinary and extraordinary, old and young, rich and poor, great and small, humorous and pathetic.en_US
